Urban Sustainability Deficits: The Urban Non-Sustainability Index (UNSI) as a Tool for Urban Policy

Urban sustainability has been revealed as one of the key elements in achieving global sustainability. There is a wide range indicators this field; however, have not exempt from criticism, both their formal aspects and practical usefulness. If measuring “measuring immeasurable”, then objective article to propose composite indicator that evaluates only deficits or, which same thing, unsustainability cities. This focus advantage showing up particular deficiencies thus priorities each city must attend to. For purpose, unsustainability, defined distance target, was considered. Aggregation carried out through generalized means, lead proper balance between compensatory non-compensatory aggregation. The results emerging application our methodology sample fifty different cities suggest all should some aspect concerning sustainability, no sustainable, but less unsustainable, significant differences terms degree common underlying structure environmental dimension contributes most.
